It was announced officially on the 9th of June 2021, that Facebook is developing their AI-controlled smartwatch but what does this exactly mean?
Facebook has been developing multiple Augmented-reality projects and their latest smartwatch announcement will be the controller for the major device.
At the moment there’s not a lot of information regarding the Facebook smartwatch but we are expecting a release for mid-2022, with the mention of multiple cameras.
Unfortunately, we are very much in the rumour stages of the Facebook smartwatch with the Facebook senior executive claiming that it’s in the early stages, with a possibility that it could never release to the public. This statement came with the following comment:
“We’re investing in technologies across the board… research doesn’t always lead to product development,” he said.
What we do know
Although the above statement does sound pretty brim, the watches existence has been revealed, credit does to the Verge, whereby the information was released.
The display on the smartwatch is rumoured to be detachable with two cameras that would work with the Facebook network / Instagram network.
The verge said the following on their reveal: “It’s part of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to build more consumer devices that circumvent Apple and Google, the two dominant mobile-phone platform creators that largely control Facebook’s ability to reach people,”
In addition to the above Facebook are working on augmented reality glasses, which the watch could be used to control the device.
Facebooks reality labs vice-president Andrew Bosworth said this on his Twitter:
We’ve said we want AR glasses to be truly useful—we’re investing in technologies across the board that will make that interaction feel more natural and intuitive. This includes research like EMG, haptics, adaptive interfaces that could come together in a wrist-based form factor. https://t.co/SMDp1mLTZ9— Boz (@boztank) June 9, 2021
It does look very exciting regardless of the news but the details of the AI-controlled smartwatch is very slim but it would seem that Facebook could already have some major competitors. Fitbit, owned by Google are also working on their augmented reality glasses, and with a watch already developed, it wouldn’t take much to add an integration for the smart glasses. Of course, we can’t forget Apple with their apple watch who is also surely working on their own augmented reality projects which will link with their products. Once more information is known, we will let you know.
